Work First, Then Play

My kids woke up this morning unable to play video games, watch television, or watch Netflix on the laptop or tablet. Why? Because we’ve limited their television time and we take their electronics at night. One may ask why we do these things and the answer is simple. I want them to work first and then play.

I’ve always had a good work ethic. Not just my personal opinion, but something I’ve been complimented on many times. I don’t like laziness and it bothers me to my core when my kids exhibit any signs of it. Unfortunately, these little people think they are supposed to play first and work whenever they feel like it. NO!!!! If you have dirty clothes, wash them. You use that bathroom, clean it. Keep your bedroom clean; I don’t sleep in there. Stop walking away and leaving the plate you ate out of; I’m not the waitress. My kids seem confused on what’s the priority. Thusly, no television, laptop, or tablet. It’s time out for thinking that the work will somehow get done without you doing it. I don’t want my kids to think they are entitled or become those people who think they can work when they want. Life just doesn’t give you those luxuries. My philosophy is you gotta work for the things you want. I want my kids to have a good work ethic. They’ve got to strive for the things they want to achieve. And it’s our responsibility as parents to teach them that. And we will! I told them today, I’m not aware of any scholarships to college for playing video games, watching YouTube, or Netflix. But there are scholarships for academics, arts/music, and athletics. My point…..do something that will benefit you in the long run. Work first! Work smart! Then play and enjoy the rewards of your labor.

Lazy hands make for poverty, but diligent hands bring wealth. (Proverbs 10:4)
