Family Staycation

Last week we had a family staycation.

With a week of vacation already scheduled and previous out of town plans canceled, my husband and I decided to keep the time off and do a staycation instead.

Staycation’s seem to be the going trend right now. And with the kids gearing up to begin school soon, we wanted to get our family time in and what better way to do it than hanging out in our own town.

Initially, my plan was to schedule something for every day, but we didn’t want it to be so formal. Our first day was a bust though. We had planned on going horse back riding, but we waited too late to call and schedule it. But that’s definitely something on our list to do this fall. It’ll be cooler anyhow. We did a local pool on day two. That was fun. It has been a while since I’ve been to a pool. I enjoyed playing around with my kids and seeing them do pool tricks. Reminded me of my younger days doing the same thing! Our third day consisted of a movie. My kids have been doing summer discount movies with their camp, so we knew movie day was reserved for Wednesday because it was only $1/per person. We watched Paddington 2 which was so cute. I promised the girls a day at the spa, so on day four I broke out the nail supplies and did home manicures and pedicures, including the foot spa. They enjoyed mommy doing that while they sat back and relaxed. Our big highlight of the week was day five. We visited our local water park. I truly enjoyed myself. In the 18 years I’ve lived in my town, I never visited the water park. We relaxed down the lazy river, screamed down the water slides, and jumped around in the wave pool. Talk about letting out your inner kid. I need to do this more often. Our staycation week was one of the best and most relaxing weeks I’ve had in a long time. And to think, we didn’t pay for a hotel room, we didn’t spend hours in the car driving, and we didn’t spend a whole lot of money. I’d say it was a good week.

Family is important to me. I took the time to enjoy my kids and the joy they bring to my life. My husband and I got to be kids again too. All-in-all, I would definitely do this again. There’s enough in our town to keep us busy.

Try a staycation. You may surprise yourself with all the fun activities to do around town.

These are my top 10 ideas:

  1. Museum
  2. Sporting Event
  3. Picnic at local park
  4. Aquarium
  5. Local pool
  6. Library
  7. Scavenger hunt
  8. Beach
  9. Movies
  10. Escape Room

The beach was definitely out for us this summer due to dangerous riptides and shark bites. But there’s just so many options as opposed to traveling and spending large amounts of money. I’m frugal, so I always look for ways to cut expenses, especially since we are a family of 6.

With a few more weeks of summer left, get out and explorer. Most importantly, do it as a family and have fun!

Here are a few photos of our week.
